A utopian realism understands that the historical process is neither wholly determined and predictable, and hence the sandbox of social engi­neers, or a merely random concatenation of events over which concerted human action can have no effect. Both such positions can lead only to fatalism and quiescence. The concept that Lefebvre develops to get beyond this debilitating polarity is what he calls the aleatory.  It draws implicitly on Marx’s famous passage from the ‘Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte’, which supposes that human action is neither rooted in ‘absolute contin­gency’, disconnected from socio-historical factors, or rigidly and blindly determined. Rather, it represents a dialectical unity linking ‘necessity and chance, where chance expresses a necessary and necessary expresses itself via a network of chances’.
