I'm not sure, but according to https://goo.gl/lmZN5H , it seems the reason for the ceremony or ritual is "coming of age" and "bar/ bat mitzvah" is the title for Jewish boys / girls who have become adults.

In Judaism, 13 is is the age at which Jewish boys receive the same rights as a full-grown man and become a "son of the law" or bar mitzvah

And according to the following Hadith, the age of pubertymay also be the right word:

Ibn Abbas said: A lunatic woman passed by Ali ibn AbuTalib. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition to the same effect as Uthman mentioned. This version has: Do you not remember that the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) has said: There are three whose actions are not recorded: a lunatic whose mind is deranged till he is restored to consciousness, a sleeper till he awakes, and a boy till he reaches puberty?
