تغییر املا city به citi در citizen ساختاری است یا از جنبه ی زیبایی شناسی زبان؟

و بطور کلی این قبیل تغییرات املایی در مورد لغات مشابه احتمالی دیگر ، دلیل ساختاری دارد یا از جنبه ی زیبایی شناسی نوشتار زبان انگلیسی است؟

Although you need a linguist to provide you with a definite answer and I'm definitely not one,:) I'll post this based on my understanding of this as a language learner. Hope you find it useful

All these words come from Old French (cite, citein) and all can be traced back to 'civis', the latin origin. My guess, changing 'e' into 'i' and 'y' and later 'y' into 'i' is more related to making them consistent with spelling and phonological rules in English. Based on this type of spelling they're considered Middle English words.

It's worth mentioning that the suffix -ship seeks its origin in Old English (-scipe) which later evolves into ship in Middle English.
