Now that I understand the sentence, I prefer it the way you have presented it in full, though, I see you have changed 'overpowering' to 'overshadowing'. The addition a comma or the word 'and' here is not useful. The word 'then' in this instance balances the phase. For example 'this and that', 'this then that'. So, with the four selections you first presented me with, I choose number 1.

The extract is part of my own writing (which I am proofreading and making necessary revisions to. That's why you noticed a change of word). The final word: it was not a question of context at all, as I was myself the very context, so to speak. One, generally speaking, does not doubt himself.
