I came up with the 'absent-minded' at first too but it sounds to mean the same as 'forgetful' rather than the concept that the student doesn't focus on the class materials.

Hi. I think absent-minded would be a perfect match for what you've asked.But if you're looking for some other words inattentive can be a good one too. BTW a cooler replacement for " your son doesn't pay attention in the class would be " you're son's mind wanders all the time in the class"
