Hello there. Hope you are well! This is Majid Khadem. I need an appropriate equivalent for the expression above. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi again, Mr. Cologny, and thanks for the help; but the fact is “ love and hate ” is, kind of, a different kettle of the fish. I found “ (to have) love and grudge (against sb / sth) ” or “ (to have) love or grudge (against sb / sth) ”. Even, apparently, there is an almost old Turkish movie called “ love and grudge ”. It is to be mentioned that both the equivalents above are not too common, considering doing the search on the Google!

Hi, Mr. Shirzad. How are you doing? Thanks for the reply. The equivalent you suggested, without loss of generality, can be considered, kind of, appropriate. Yet, thinking about it, it’s not a perfect equivalent for the expression above. Think twice, please. Isn’t it sort of a literally-translated equivalent?

I've done a search on Google, for what you suggested. " Friendship and enmity " is not too common; but, seemingly, " friendship or enmity " is common, in some ways.

Problem is, Majid, and I am speaking for myself here, it's hard to know what حب و بغض actually means as a fixed expression or where it may be used in the Persian language.

Dear Cologny! Imagine, for instance, you tell somebody: " You judge about such and such a person / thing in such and such a way, since you have love and grudge against her / him / that! Yes! You are mad at him / her / that! It's far from being professional! ". I hope it's clarified the core meaning of the expression above!

سلام. با احترام به نظر دوستان، "حب و بغض" رو اگر بخواین به تنهایی ترجمه کینن باید کلمه به کلمه ترجمه بشه، یعنی love and grudge یا likes and dislikes، چون این ترکیب در زبان فارسی جزئی از یک مصدر محسوب میشه، مثلا: حب و بغض داشتن. که در این صورت همانطور که خودتون هم نوشتین یک ترکیب فعلی تشکیل میده:

to have love and grudge (towards someone)

Hi, Ms. Son-Rez. How are you doing? Thanks for the reply. Neither am I able to confirm nor am I able to to deny your point of view! Additionally, doing a search on the Google, " Love and grudge toward sb / sth " or " Love or grudge toward sb / sth " have no result. As I wrote above, even “ (to have) love and grudge (against sb / sth) ” or “ (to have) love or grudge (against sb / sth) ” are kind of rarely common! At any rate, thanks again, Ms.!

My dear dudes! I suppose " To have likes and dislikes (toward sb / sth) " is really far from being an exact equivalent for the expression above. that's, sort of,  a far-normalized feeling of love and hate. Simply put, " likes " means " to be interested in sb / sth " and " dislikes " means " to be uninterested in sb / sth ". These words are too soft in comparison with the harsh meaning of " love and grudge "!

likes and dislikes, love and hate
