Hi. I copied and pasted these sentences from 2 different websites:

 

Basically in America a state school would be a college that is funded by the state and is therefore public and therefore most of the time more expensive. An example would be I live in Massachusetts so the University of Massachusetts at Lowell is a STATE school and so it is paid for by taxpayers dollars. A private school means that it is funded NOT from the state and from donations from people that went there and from the "fees" associated with going there. So Harvard University is a private school and harder to get into than a a public state school and therefore more expensive because they do not get help from the state to pay for educational costs. Public schools also pay teachers much less than private schools so thats why the "better" teachers are often at the private schools therefore meaning they get paid more therefore leading to higher educational costs.

The subtle distinction between a private and an independent school has to do with the legal structure of each. An independent school has a truly independent board of governors or trustees. A private school can theoretically be part of another entity such as a for profit corporation or a not for profit organization such as a church or synagogue.
