Mark's funeral is tomorrow,  

"it would have meant a lot to him if you came"

I never got that! how can I make these kind of conditional sentences?

1. Definition (expr.) is very important, is something you appreciate

Examples It means a lot to me that you are will to write a recommendation for me.

IF+ past simple, subject + would/could/might/... + verb

این ساختار رو وقتی استفاده میکنند که بخوان در مورد رویا و خیال ویا اتفاقی که  نیوفتاده  صحبت کنند .و باید دقت کرد جمله اول حتی اگر فاعل مفرد باشه ما نمیتونیم از was استفاده کنیم به جای اون باید از were استفاده کرد. البته تو مثال شما جای جمله اول و دوم جا به جا شده که فرقی نمیکنه.

Example:

IF I were a bird, I would fly all the time.

If I had 10000000$, I would doubt it to charity.

این ساختار رو میتونیم یه طور دیگه هم به کار ببریم.

Were I a bird, I would fly all the time.

As you know we have three conditionals in general (there are many more):

I-if+present     will+ bare infinitive

If we play tennis, I will win

Used to talk about real conditions. It is possible and "very likely" that our winning will happen.

II-If+past       would+ bare infinitive

If we played tennis, I would win/ If I were a bird, I would fly.

Used to say that it is possible but "very unlikely" that this happen.

III-If+past perfect    would have+ past participle

If we had played tennis, I would have won

Used to say that it is impossible because the action refers to past.

 

Thus we have:

It will mean a lot, if you come. (it is referring to future)

It would mean a lot, if you came. (it is also future but very unlikely e.g. you are in a another country and you cannot come back)

 

It would have meant a lot, if you had come (plz note the tense)

 

So, Marks funeral was yesterday and you didnt show up, but if you had come, I would have appreciate it.
