rogue has a negative connotation but "rend" is somehow neutral or its more safe to say that it has both the negative and positive connotations 

and knave is a degrading word so is not suitable either

Hi phoenix, I think "rend" has always negative meaning and it hasn`t not a positive definition. As Ali said rogue and knave are good terms for this word. and additionally "sly" and "shrewd" and "knowing" and "astute" are other meaning for "rend".

i can see that you have a good command on English but in Persian literature "rend" is not altogether negative and has a mystical meaning. but all the suggested words are kind of close to its meaning

once i was discussing this issue with an idol in both English and Persian literature and he suggested that we should simply use "rend" for it in English since there is no single word in English that can grasp the whole meaning of that in Persian.

totally different from رند(/rend/)!
