A metaphor contains a source domain which represents the semantic field of the known concept, a target domain which represents the semantic field of the less-known concept, and a mapping process from the source domain onto the target domain. Mapping is a selective process since not all the attributes of the source concept can be projected onto the target concept. For instance, in the metaphor “Time is money” the physical attributes of money like its solid state or structure cannot be projected onto the concept of time. “What is projected is the cognitive topology of the source domain that is the slots in the source domain as well as their relation with each other” (Moser 2000, p. 2).
