I hear the cymbals as they thump and bang

Hi there, 

I have some students aged 14-16 , their level is intermediate (family and friends 4) I wanna teach them a reading today and one of the sentences is " I hear the cymbals as they thump and bang " . How can I convey the meaning of the words " thump and bang " ? I know the definitions but it's a little bit hard for them to understand it in English

Children at this age and level do not need to know the difference between these two closely synonymous words. These words are just used in their song to give it a pleasant rhythm.

Explain that they both mean:

To make a loud sound by hitting two things together hard.
