It's explanatory.
It's not a good idea to assume a word or a phrase has an exact synonym in English; there may well not be one. However, in this case, "so that" means "which means".

It indicates result.
The expression so that really you can only put two people in a love seat, but you can get three or four people in a sofa is a result adjunct expressing the result of there being two different numbers of cushions.
Note that you could replace so that with with the result that.
